The event of Jesus baptism was important because this was the inauguration of Jesus ministry. In this text God personally declared the deity of Christ and used scripture from the law, psalms, and prophets as evidence. Just as Jesus would later say in the sermon of the mount he did not come to destroy the Law or the Prophets but to fulfill them. God from His inauguration has declared that this is who all of scripture points to and is fulfilled in.
